Speak No Evil (2022)

Scandinavian horror is having an incredible moment this year. With features like Hatching, The Innocents, and Speak No Evil, we get a glimpse into the darker minds of these picturesque socialist countries. While I usually find that bleak horror is not my personal taste, Speak No Evil is such a masterpiece that it is hard not to appreciate what it is doing. A Danish family decides to visit a Dutch family they met on vacation some months ago. While the Danish family cherishes their first encounter with the Dutch family, it quickly becomes clear that the Dutch family might not be as friendly as they remember. The movie relies on much of our social anxieties, especially those around trying to be nice and polite even when we are extremely uncomfortable. The tension builds until it is almost unendurable, making this one of the most intense, memorable viewing experiences I have had in some time. Through this strange and stressful tale we explore themes around family structure, masculinity, and how far we will go to adhere to social norms. Giving too much away will spoil the fun, but I suggest having a relaxing glass of wine or a hot cup of herbal tea to offset the unbearable anxiety you will experience. 4 out of 5 sacs of blood.
